it’s been ages again, sorry about that. i’ve been alternately busy and lazy this week, so i’m going to try to remember the busy bits and tell you about those instead of the midday wake-ups and ice poles at silly hours…
so. well, the other night we (just tim and i) went into downtown, walked all the way across it and found a bar called 69 taps, which has, yup, 69 taps of beer. tim was tres happy and i drank magic hat, which is a girl’s beer. but a nice one. and we sat outside but it was so hot – like being in a bath. one of my baths, that you get out of with red legs. and then we went in, because, phewey, air conditioning, and there were so many bugs out there, and then tim taught me to play pool. i have played a grand total of maybe 5 games in my life and am rubbish at it, but somehow managed a streak of beginners luck and beat him 3 times. while he is clearly a better player than me and, you know, holds the cue properly, i have some useful techniques (visualisation, always using the same cue, pure fluke) which helped me to kick his teachy butt. it was great. well, if i’m honest, i only really count it as beating him once, because the first time he potted the black half way through, the second time i genuinely, really, actually won, and the third game he potted a winning black, closely followed by a losing cue ball.
then we went to the barley house, which feels kind of like a chicago rock type bar, except that it’s not a novelty american bar, it is an actual american bar. sometimes it comes as a surprise that they’re not being funny.
and then after that we walked up to veggiterranean, which is completely vegan and wonderful and very fancy. it was late though, and so they weren’t serving food anymore and we had cocktails instead. best damn bloody mary of my life. tim had a flirtini. hey, i’m not judging. the bar staff were though i think. and then our lovely friend greg picked us up and we went to another bar in town, matinee, which I think we mentioned before, and that was that. wonderous.
today is labour day, so tim’s off work (for most of the week i think) and we’re going to have a bbq in the park with some friends tonight. last night, actually, we went to claudia and steve’s (remember? that’s tim’s supervisor and his wife, who we stayed with when we first arrived all that time ago), and had a bbq there, and then a fire in the garden and it was so nice. claudia and i are going to do some tag sales on wednesday. maybe we’ll get a sofa. imagine.
we got a dining table though, hurrah! dee dee’s lovely mummy took us to a tag sale last week at the old folk’s home where she works and i got it for $70. aceness. then we had to get it home… which was fun! they have one of those people carriers… a space something or another, which we figured it would fit into no problem, but actually, you couldn’t even half-shut the boot. so we put the seats down, and, oh, it was funny, matt, dee dee’s twin brother climbed in the back and held the table in car by holding onto the legs and clinging to the car all the way home. i wish i had taken a picture.
and we went to their house and they have the most beautiful cat… when will it be our turn for a cat?
and what else have we been doing? today is the day of almighty house cleaning, hence the laundry room. it’s in the basement of the building across the car park from us and it’s kind of spooky. but writing this is a nice distraction for sure. so that means that at least once a week i will blog from now until we get a washing machine. of course it will be more often than that, but once a week for sure.
oh, and that’s the other thing – nanowrimo. someone told me about it a couple of weeks ago, and since then i’ve been working on getting ready for it. it stands for national novel writing month, and it takes place in november, although you can do all the planning you need before hand, and i’m writing that thing again/still – you know, the fairytale thing. i probably told you about it before. well it’s kind of cheating because you’re supposed to start completely from scratch, without a scrap of prose already written, and only with a plot planned, but i figure i’m only cheating myself, and i’ve been writing this godforsaken story for so long now that anything which gives me a shoe in the bum to start writing it again has to be the best thing. so there we are. writing again. which means also drinking way too much coffee. i bought a tea pot the other day with the intention of switching to green tea, so maybe i’ll be less buzzy next week. probably that would be a good thing. and a teapot! why, i’ll be able to sit still for ages longer if i don’t have to get up every half hour to make coffee. it’s all about bum on seat time. that’s the key.
i promise that tim will one day write a blog about the actual reason we’re in akron in the first place. remember? his course and that kind of stuff? do you remember tim? i’m sorry he hasn’t written in such a long time. i think he thinks that now that he’s lecturing, he’s above you people. don’t worry, i’ll bring him back to earth.
thanks so much for our letters and cards and presents, we are very lucky and will start writing you guys back soon! mail is the best thing ever. keep it coming please! we love you xx
oh, and soph? vic? this one’s for you…
